British Airways has suspended its flights to Cairo airport for a week for safety reasons without giving any further information. All other airlines operate their flights without any problems. BA reportedly cited “an increased risk of terrorism against aviation” in Egypt. However, Cairo airport claimed that it met all safety standards and Egyptian Aviation Minister Younes El Masry was “dismayed by the unilateral decision to suspend flights”, the British ambassador apologized.
Other incidents also took place at Cairo airport following the final of the African Cup of Nations. Between 10,000 and 15,000 Algerian fans remained stuck at the airport due to a lack of available aircraft. The fans were forced to sleep on site and wait for availability, which ruins their joy at winning.
