On July 9th, 2019, France introduced an « eco-tax » going from 1,50€ to 18€ on flight tickets depending on the seat chosen. This tax should be put in place in 2020 for all flights departing from France except for correspondences. This tax should bring in 182M€ to the French government. According to the French minister of Transport Elisabeth Borne, this capital should be reinvested in greener transport infrastructures, particularly rail transport.
For flights in the EU, the eco tax will be 1,5€ for economic-class seats and 9€ for business-class seats. For flight that are not EU bound, the tax will be doubled, 3€ for economic-class seats and 18€ for business-class seats.
Air France did not welcome this tax well as 50% of their flights depart from France thus having an influence its competitiveness.
